Domestic Cannabis Eradication Squad
One of the most successful programs of the Drug Trafficking Central Unit is the Domestic Cannabis Eradication and Suppression Program (DCESP). DCESP is a nationwide program administered by the Drug Enforcement Agency, who provide funding to state law enforcement agencies in support of marijuana eradication programs. The New Jersey State Police's Marijuana Eradication Squad is the lead agency for DCESP in New Jersey. Members of the Marijuana Eradication Squad conduct their own investigations regarding both indoor and outdoor marijuana cultivation, in addition to offering assistance to other agencies conducting these types of investigations. The Marijuana Eradication Squad has established a toll-free tip-line (1-888-798-WEED) which is monitored around the clock by the Regional Operations Intelligence Center. Callers to the tip-line can receive rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to marijuana cultivation arrests.
In addition to their investigative responsibilities, Marijuana Eradication Squad members annually conduct a three-day Marijuana Investigation and Eradication School. This school is attended by approximately 100 law enforcement personnel from around the state, and encompasses both classroom lectures, and hands-on training, including aerial marijuana spotting, booby trap awareness, and land navigation.
