Brief History of NJSP Street Gang Units

The mission of the New Jersey State Police Intelligence Section is to prevent, disrupt, and interdict organized crime, terrorism, violent criminals, and illegal activity that undermine the public safety and security of our state’s citizens. Our mandate is to do so by facilitating intelligence exchange, employing proactive investigative measures, and by leveraging the use of technology to effectively and efficiently serve our own members and the members of our allied law enforcement partners.

The vision of the Intelligence Section is to be recognized as the most comprehensive, professional, and effective proactive investigative entity and investigative service partner in the United States. The Intelligence Section strives to address “all threats, all hazards, all crimes.”

The Intelligence Section is charged with employing the principles of Intelligence Led Policing to identify significant threats and combat crime. Collecting, extracting, summarizing, analyzing and disseminating criminal intelligence gathered from a variety of sources is critical to the Division’s Intelligence Led Policing Initiative. Effective analysis of intelligence is designed to provide decision-makers with relevant intelligence products which are utilized to prioritize the allocation of resources to detect crime through tactical and strategic operations.

The Intelligence Section also produces the Statewide Intelligence Threat Assessment. This document serves as the guide to the organization’s decision-makers of where best to earmark intelligence and investigative resources based on the capabilities of the New Jersey State Police, the threat posed by criminals, and the vulnerabilities that present opportunities for organized criminals and those seeking to commit terrorist acts against our homeland.

The Intelligence Section is made up of the following six (6) Bureaus:
