The goal of the Community Services Unit is to ensure that the various communities throughout this state are provided with professional and effective service, based upon their diverse needs and concerns. The Community Services Unit shall employ crime prevention and community-oriented program strategies to their fullest extent to better serve the communities of this state. By serving as an active liaison between these communities and the State Police, the Community Services Unit will facilitate established programs and perpetuate positive working relationships that will benefit the citizens of New Jersey and the New Jersey State Police.

The Community Services Unit shall promote and foster positive relationships within the community and will enhance the quality of life for the citizens of New Jersey by addressing community concerns, by utilizing proactive programs to enhance the safety of all who live and travel in New Jersey. The unit will empower communities to solve and prevent ongoing problems and enable citizens to participate in that process. The unit will facilitate creative and pro active problem solving strategies, which will enhance the quality of life for residents in their communities and promote individual responsibility while providing safety within the community. The unit will strive to increase the safety and security in our schools to provide students a place to learn and grow. The unit will enable students to view the police as a positive component to society at an age where opinions are being formed. The unit will use current and future technology to enhance the quality of instruction and remove geographical barriers reaching all parts of the state. The unit will ultimately reduce crime, the perception of crime, social and physical disorder, and physical deterioration of communities. The unit will create, through instruction and education, a cadre of leaders who will take these concepts back to their communities and their individual stations to inform and teach others through example.

Child Protective Seat Installation (CPS)

• The main objectives are to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of overtime details to all eligible personnel and standardize the administrative procedures of the overall program. Additionally, the program provides certifications for technicians who install the child seats.

Defensive Driving Course / Alive at 25

• Is a highly interactive young driver intervention program in which the instructor plays the role of the Facilitator. The facilitator uses workbook exercises, interactive video segments, small group discussions, role playing, and short lectures to help young drivers develop convictions and strategies that will keep them safer on the road. The course consists of four sessions built on interactive learning activities designed to involve young drivers in each session.

New Jersey Drive

• Offers a multifaceted, interactive program to educate the public on the dangers and consequences of Driving While Impaired (DWI). This program utilizes both the Fatal Vision Goggles along with golf-carts on a designed course.

Youth Leadership Safety Program

• The Safety Program is a collaborative effort designed to offer an educational safety awareness curriculum in the classroom as a means to recognize and prevent natural and created pressures that may harm or influence our children. The program delivers preventative measures to heighten those protective components with a specific emphasis on family, school, and community bonding strategies. The program is presented to grade school students in the 5th and 6th grade.

Programs within the Youth Leadership Safety Program:

• “Drug Demand Reduction” will demonstrate resistance techniques. Students will learn, display and explain good decision-making skills. This lesson will reinforce a sense of empowerment within each student.
• “Bullying, Conflict Resolution” provides students with an understanding of how to reduce violence in schools. Students will learn that they can take specific steps to keep themselves and their peers safer.
• “Gang Awareness” is an interactive lesson on social behavior. It presents a basic understanding of gangs and their activities. Students will be tasked with developing and forming strategies of positive alternative activities. will show students ways they can safely surf the web. A video portion of the lesson will alert the students to some dangers and threats they may encounter while using the Internet. The program will show lessons around the students’ responses to problems they may encounter.
• “Pedestrian Safety” This lesson will review ways to keep safe as a pedestrian. The lesson will also give students a better understanding of hazards they may face as a pedestrian.
• “Poison Control and Safety” will help students understand the presence and dangers of poisonous substances in the home, school and community. The lesson will help promote the necessary skills to prevent poisoning and enhance a safer home and school environment.
• “Community Emergency Response” will provide a guide to help instruct students recognizing, preparing and responding to a local disaster.
• “How to be a Role Model” is an interactive and informative discussion on respect, duty, and caring.
• “An overview and introduction of Leadership” while establishing the goals, objectives and responsibilities of the safety students
• “Bicycle Safety” Acquaints the bicycle rider with the requirements and restrictions placed upon them by state law when they ride bicycles on public roads.
• “Automobile Safety” The program will allow students to explore the hazards and review safety issues surrounding automobiles. Students will learn about “right-of-way” statues and other relevant laws.
• “Protecting the Environment” allows students to discuss the effects they have on the environment. They will learn that they can take specific measures to protect natural resources, and they will discover the importance of recycling.

Fatal Vision Goggles

• The fatal vision goggles are a training tool to vividly demonstrate the concept of impairment and the dangers of impaired driving. This program can serve a dual purpose as a stand-alone lesson plan or in conjunction with a Drivers Education presentation.

State Police Explorer Program

• Law Enforcement Exploring is a program where young adults can learn about law enforcement through hands on training and education. The objective of the State Police Explorer Program is to provide the structure and resources needed for the youth of America to learn about career opportunities, to make ethical decisions

Senior Frauds and Scams

• An awareness program that provides protective information for seniors on issues related to telemarketing and frauds/scams.

General Safety For Seniors

• An interactive presentation on a variety of personal safety topics, intended to guide and teach seniors of the dangers identity theft, telemarketers and personal safety.

Driving While Intoxicating (DWI)

• Informs High School students of the danger of drinking and driving and advises them of three factors that contribute to intoxication and three areas of performance affected by intoxication.

Bullying and Conflict Resolution

• “Bullying, Conflict Resolution” provides students with an understanding of how to reduce violence in schools. Students will learn that they can take specific steps to keep themselves and their peers safer.

Seatbelt and Safe Driver Presentation

• Information regarding the proper selection and use of various child and adult restraint systems. Important information that will allow informed choices by parents and drivers to properly restrain children while in a motor vehicle and an awareness program for those drivers who choose not to wear a restraint.

Internet Safety - View NJSP Internet Safety Brochure

• Identity theft presentations focus on issues and concerns centered on a growing criminal trend throughout our nation.

Personal Safety

• An interactive presentation on a variety of personal safety topics, intended to guide and teach adults of the dangers on identity theft, telemarketers and personal safety.

National Night Out

• National Night Out is a community held event, which celebrates a united nation of people against crime and violence.

Community Events

• Various community events; including community days, festivals, fairs and celebratory days, as well as, town meetings.

School Security and Events

• Provide security and a Law Enforcement presence for school events and extra curricular activities.

School Resource Troopers (SRT)

• The School Resource Trooper (SRT) program is designed to reduce juvenile delinquency and instill civic awareness through a collaborative approach by focusing on education, prevention, communication, and information sharing to foster and promote a positive atmosphere between law enforcement and those within the educational system.

Bicycle Patrol

• The deployment of a Bicycle Patrol will facilitate the delivery of police services during specialized details in congested areas. These services will be delivered in a more-timely manner due to the mobility of a Bicycle Patrol. The program trains, certifies and instructs officers on the various aspects of Bicycle Patrol. Troopers and officers learn riding techniques that will help their respective departments when they target specific areas within their communities

Neighborhood Watch Programs

• The prevention of crime, particularly crime involving residential neighborhoods is a responsibility that must be shared equally by law enforcement and private citizens. The fact is that the impact on crime prevention by law enforcement alone is minimal when compared with the power of private citizens working with law enforcement and with each other. Neighborhood Watch is based on this concept of cooperation, and nationwide statistics prove that it works. When citizens take positive stops to secure their own property and neighbors learn how to report suspicious activity around their homes, burglary and related offenses decrease dramatically.
