Governor Murphy Announces New Job Training Program for Culinary and Hospitality Industry in Atlantic City

09/20/2018

ATLANTIC CITY - Governor Phil Murphy today announced a new full-time job training program, in partnership with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and UNITE HERE Local 54. Based at the Atlantic City Convention Center, with startup funding from the Department of Labor, this program will provide training, education and support services for jobs in the culinary and hospitality industry.

“A stronger and fairer economy cannot be established without good and permanent jobs for the people of New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy. “The establishment of this program ensures that when Atlantic City rises, so do its residents.”

With the opening of new casino properties in Atlantic City and the resurgence of the city’s hospitality industry, there is a high demand for union labor. This training program will provide local residents with the tools and support they need to take on full-time, permanent, union jobs.

The training program will focus on training residents who are underemployed or living in poverty, with community partners such as the Atlantic County Recovery Court, Covenant House, WorkFirst NJ, the Atlantic County One-Stop Career Center, as well as community corrections partners from the county, state, and federal levels. The program, developed by Local 54 in consultation with business owners and executives, will train residents for 5,000 entry-level positions.
