Governor Murphy Presents Fiscal Year 2020 Budget: A Blueprint For The Middle Class

Governor Phil Murphy presented his Fiscal Year 2020 (FY2020) budget – a plan to put New Jersey on a responsible path forward through over $1.1 billion in sustainable savings and support for our middle class through targeted investments in NJ TRANSIT, school funding, and property tax relief.

“This budget continues our work to invest in the single most consequential asset in New Jersey: our people,” said Governor Murphy. “This budget produces sustainable savings totaling over $1.1 billion, including approximately $800 million in health care savings. These savings allow for unprecedented investment in our middle class through increased funding for NJ TRANSIT, a boost in school funding, and property tax relief through the Homestead Benefit Program.”

“This year’s budget is a blueprint for how we continue to build a more secure and inclusive middle class in New Jersey. It builds on the progress we’ve already made and makes real the promise of a stronger and fairer state that works for every New Jersey family.”

The budget includes appropriations totaling $38.6 billion, with a projected surplus of $1.16 billion and projected savings of $1.1 billion.

As part of her statewide Nurture NJ campaign, First Lady Tammy Murphy hosted a Family Festival at Octavius V. Catto Family School in Camden. “New Jersey’s maternal and infant mortality rates are startling, and for woman and babies of color the statistics are even more dire,” said First Lady Tammy Murphy. “If we are to save our mothers and babies, we must simultaneously work on both implicit bias in our healthcare systems and on the economic and social factors that contribute to the disparities. Through our Nurture NJ campaign, Family Festivals connect parents and caregivers with state, county, and local resources, creating a comprehensive approach to access care, support, resources, and relief.”

Governor Murphy Highlights NJ Transit Investments, Progress

Governor Phil Murphy joined with legislators and state transportation leaders to highlight critical investments that his FY2020 budget proposal will make in NJ TRANSIT. After nearly a decade of fiscal mismanagement and disinvestment in the agency, Governor Murphy’s budget will bring renewed focus to providing safe and reliable bus and rail travel to give New Jersey residents and commuters the transportation network they deserve.

“New Jersey is a densely populated state situated between two major population and industry centers—New York City and Philadelphia. We need to get NJ TRANSIT right to make sure that people can get around our state and get to work without the constant fear of delay or cancellation,” said Governor Murphy. “This budget continues this administration’s commitment to getting NJ TRANSIT on the right track and to making New Jersey a national leader in transportation.”
