Statement by Governor Murphy on the Three-Year Anniversary of the Murder of Daniel Anderl, Son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas

07/19/2023

"Three years ago today, our state and nation were shocked and horrified when an armed assailant targeting U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas showed up at Judge Salas's home and murdered her beloved 20-year-old son, Daniel Anderl, and shot and severely wounded her husband Mark.  All of us continue to pray for Judge Salas and her family, as their unspeakable loss underscores the dangers that judges and their loved ones face.

In an unfathomable display of courage and strength, Judge Salas has spent the last three years advocating for increased judicial security and protection of judges' private information to ensure that this tragedy would not happen to others.  I was deeply moved when I had the honor of signing Daniel's Law alongside Judge Salas in November 2020 to protect the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges from public disclosure.  My administration will continue to do whatever is needed to protect the brave women and men on our bench and ensure an independent judiciary that is essential to our constitutional form of government."
