TRENTON – Governor Phil Murphy today announced that Tim Hillmann, who currently serves as Deputy Chief of Staff for Government Affairs, has been promoted to Principal Deputy Chief of Staff. Tim will begin his new role on Monday, October 2.

“Tim has been a key fixture in my office since 2019 and has successfully overseen our legislative affairs, intergovernmental affairs, appointments, and constituent relations teams,” said Governor Murphy. “In his new expanded role, Tim will work under incoming Chief of Staff Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti and have a hand in managing additional departments within our office. I am thrilled to have Tim continue serving on our senior leadership team and advancing the work of our Administration.”

“Since joining the Murphy Administration, Tim has played an essential role in successfully managing some of our high-stakes teams, allowing us to build a stronger and fairer New Jersey,” said Chief of Staff George Helmy. “I can’t think of anyone better to serve as Principal Deputy Chief of Staff to continue the Murphy administration’s unprecedented run of accomplishments.”

Prior to his role as Deputy Chief of Staff for Government Affairs, Tim served as the Governor’s Director of Appointments, having joined the Murphy Administration in 2019. Prior to that, he spent nine years working in the United States Senate.

He is a graduate of Fordham University and resides in Metuchen with his wife Catherine, son Owen, and daughter Zara.
