Robert E. Nagle was born in 1951 in Newark, New Jersey, and was raised in Howell, New Jersey. Trooper Nagle was a member of the New Jersey Marine Police and a graduating member of the 116A New Jersey State Police Class. His last assignment with the State Police was with the Commercial Carrier Safety Inspections Central Unit. Trooper Nagle also served his country for six years in the Air National Guard. His service with the New Jersey State Police was characterized by loyalty, fearless performance of duty and faithful and honorable devotion to the principles of the New Jersey State Police.

Trooper Nagle died as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty from his response to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Exposure to the dust and debris he encountered resulted in a kidney cancer diagnosis, which metastasized to his lungs. On November 26, 2018, Trooper Nagle succumbed to his injuries.
Trooper Nagle served the citizens of New Jersey for 34 years before retiring in 2004.

Trooper Nagle was survived by his wife, two children, grandchildren, and brother. He was 67 years old.
