Motor Vehicle Stop Leads to Seizure of Drugs and Cash

Union Township, N.J. - The New Jersey State Police have arrested Raymond Mercado, 22, and Corey Sapp, 21, of Bronx, N,Y. and seized $10,000 worth heroin, $250 worth of marijuana, and more than $1,000 in cash during a traffic stop in Union Township, Hunterdon County.

On Sunday, September 13, at 9:34 a.m., Trooper Willie Johnson stopped Mercado for a traffic violation at milepost 12.2 westbound on Interstate 78. During the stop, Tpr. Johnson discovered that Mercado and his passenger, Sapp, were in possession of marijuana. After further investigation, troopers discovered 2,000 wax folds of heroin in a hidden compartment concealed within the vehicle. Drug traffickers market their "brand" of drug by ink-stamping the outside of a wax fold with a unique image or phrase.

Raymond Mercado and Corey Sapp were charged with possession of CDS and possession of CDS with intent to distribute. Mercado and Sapp were lodged in Hunterdon County jail pending a detention hearing.

Charges are mere accusations, and the accused are considered innocent until proven guilty.
