Firearms Information


All firearm applications must be completed online through the links listed on this page.

NJ Residents: The Police Department that serves your community must assist you with your firearm application. Ex. - If you reside in a State Police jurisdiction or a Local Police Department jurisdiction, you must contact that State Police Station or Local Police Department for all assistance.

Dual Residents: If you are a dual resident of another state in addition to the State of New Jersey, you must apply to the jurisdiction you reside within New Jersey.

Out of State Applicants: If you live outside of the State of New Jersey and are not a dual resident, you must apply to the closest NJSP Station to your residence in driving mileage. These are the list of NJSP Stations that must be contacted before applying as an out of State applicant. Click here



You MUST contact your state or local police department for the following inquiries:

  • SBI Numbers: The State or Local Police Department that you submitted your application to MUST contact the Firearms Investigation Unit regarding issues with your SBI number. Do not contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit.

  • Fingerprint Submissions: The State or Local Police Department that you submitted your application to MUST contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit regarding issues with your fingerprint submissions. Do not contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit.

  • Application Revisions: The State or Local Police Department that you submitted your application to MUST make requested revisions to your reference’s information you provided during your submission of your firearm application. For example, updating a reference’s email. Do not contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit.

  • Status Updates: The State or Local Police Department that you submitted your application to MUST give any status updates if an update is available. Including, but not limited to, a possible completion date. Check your spam or junk folder for all emails from the online firearm systems or firearms coordinator from the state or local police department where you applied prior to inquiring about your application. Do not contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit.

  • ORI Numbers: Contact your State or Local Police Department to obtain their ORI. Do not contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit.

  • The State or Local Police Department that you submitted your application SHOULD NOT direct you to contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit regarding your online firearm application questions.

If you contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit regarding an issue that must be handled by your State or Local Police Department, you will not receive a reply.

Shooting Ranges

Any shooting instruction should be conducted by a certified firearms instructor that must provide a copy of their certification to the person they train. Certified firearm instructors can advise individuals on the lawful and safe handling and storage of firearms in the State of New Jersey. They must also provide in-person New Jersey Use of Force instruction, and target training on a firing range to demonstrate proficiency. A certified firearms instructor can conduct this training at any shooting range that possesses the capability to achieve these goals to be compliant with the lawful standards for the State of New Jersey.
